Charter Leader,
This week is “National Charter Schools Week” and we are celebrating the 5,000 charters and 1.5 million charter students across America!
The NC Alliance held a press conference Monday to unveil its “Intelligent Increase Initiative”. We do not support any cap on quality charter schools but we specifically defined categories of charters that should be expanded now. Next Wednesday the General Assembly convenes and 19 days from then the RTTT applications are due from the states. We expect and certainly hope the Governor will acquiesce and support some positive legislation.

Meet Your Alliance Board members: Todd Havican

An editorial in the Charleston Gazette charges the state teachers’ unions with exploiting the recent tragedy in which 29 coal miners lost their lives in order to undermine incumbent West Virginia state senator Erik Wells’ campaign for reelection, because Wells introduced a bill to allow charter schools. The unions paid over $32,000 for an attack ad…more.

Welcome River Mill Academy of Graham as an Alliance member school!
A membership application is attached. We must have all the schools on board to keep membership fees low and to sustain the Alliance. Plus, all the initial cost should be recovered by discounted conference attendee fees (also the early registration discounts are extended through May 31).
Speaking of the July 11-13 conference please visit our website and register today. We will have forums for administrators and board members, educators, parents, and other supporters. We need you all to consider making presentations to attendees. Go to Presentations and give us your ideas and topics you’d like to share.
