Charter Leaders,
Theme of Alliance’s first conference
This week in the General Assembly saw Senate Bill 704 barely pass. You may see how your senator voted here. Sen. Albertson, Queen, and Soles “paired” and voted Yes. Yes votes means they wanted the bill passed without adding charter schools. These senators also voted Yes:
Atwater; Basnight; Blue; Clodfelter; Dannelly; Dickson; Foriest; Garrou; Graham; Hoyle; Jenkins; Jones; Kinnaird; McKissick; Nesbitt; Purcell; Shaw; Stein; Swindell; Vaughan; Walters plus the three above.
This bill does not create charter schools as some press accounts alleged. At best they would be called “charter lite” schools. This bill is for Race to the Top funds only and many, including this writer, believe it will not impress anyone in Washington who know anything about public charter schools.
We are still planning to host NC’s part of the nationwide 100 theatre screening of The Lottery on June 8th at four venues across the state. When the exact locales are named we will alert you and ask that you tell your charter family and friends.
Our July 11-13 conference is picking up steam with more and more vendors and folks wanting to present at break-out sessions. Please get on board this week. A membership application form is attached for those schools that have not joined the Alliance. We must have all the schools on board to keep membership fees low and to sustain the Alliance. Plus, all the initial cost should be recovered by discounted conference attendee fees (also the early registration discounts are extended through Friday, June 4th.
Just tell us you will join and we’ll bill you before the conference allowing you to get the discounts. We can bill you @ $3 a student payable in one payment or spread the cost out @$4 a student over 12 months.
RALEIGH — When a team of senior state (NC) officials went to Washington in March seeking more than $400 million from the Obama administration’s Race to the Top education reform program, members provided what critics call deceptive answers to reviewers asking about charter schools. Read more here…
