Charter Leaders,

Mark your calendars for June 8th at 7:30 P.M. We are hosting a movie about charter schools across the state at five locations, Charlotte, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Durham, and Greensboro. It is “The Lottery” by Madeleine Sackler, a powerful documentary of the challenges of a charter school, NYC’s Harlem Success Academy.

It will be shown across America that night so join us at one of the sites. Please check the link above for theatre information in the next few days. The Alliance needs 5-10 volunteers (we will get you free tickets) at each venue to help with the event. I  also ask for a charter principal who might want to address the audience for a couple of minutes.

Our July 11-13 conference is picking up steam with more and more vendors and folks wanting to present at break-out sessions. Please get on board this week. A membership application form is attached for those schools that have not joined the Alliance. We must have all the schools on board to keep membership fees low and to sustain the Alliance. Plus, all the initial cost should be recovered by discounted conference attendee fees (also the early registration discounts are extended through May 31).

Join us on Facebook  like the Alliance’s administrative guru Shannon Moody. Shannon is always ready to serve our member schools. Our office number is 919-900-8951 and Shannon’s email shannon.moody@nccharters.org.

From: The Center for Education Reform

This year we have an unprecedented opportunity to reset the course of American education for our children. With 37 races for governor on the horizon, voters must be savvy about what the candidates believe and what they are likely to do to advance education reform – or stop it in its tracks. Early analysis of candidates suggests a more reform-minded crop than in previous years, with many of them sharing an appreciation – at one level or another – for choice and accountability as key education levers for change. Carolina Journal: Test scores were improving at Moore Academy…

Attorney David Hostettler reminds you, “Time is also of the essence in light of possible legislation that may cap charter school entitlements, in addition to the existing 3-year statute of limitations established by the Sugar Creek cases.” Read more

Reminder, please forward this edition to staff and parents. We want them to see the movie and we need volunteers!

By the way, I was glad to get a message from DPI May 14th that  “EDDIE is Live”. That’s always good to hear.     ;-)
