Charter Leaders,
Good morning from Raleigh! NC Alliance Board members Brandon Smith and Paul Norcross and I are departing for Chicago this afternoon for the National Alliance’s conference. Kate Alice Dunaway (Pine Lake Preparatory), Joe Maimone (Thomas Jefferson Classical), John Betterton (Roxboro), Ozie Hall (Kinston), Donnie and Cynthia McQueen (Torchlight), Baker Mitchell (Charter Day), Michael Pratt (Rocky Mount) and about 70 other NC leaders and supporters will be among the 4,000 expected in the Windy City.
Speaking of conferences, our very own inaugural conference is set for July 11-13 here at the Sheraton Raleigh. We have sold out our vendor space but we have room for more attendees so register now. We have 35 exciting presentations lined up! Win a $1,000 MacBook on the last day. Visit legislators on Tuesday also. Great national speakers and more! Your Board members may come free if the school is a member. Meet the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Board of Education members at our Monday luncheon.

The 2010-2011 state budget may be released this week. It is anticipated that provisions have been added to the budget to restrict our schools’ efforts to collect funds due them from mis-allocations of local funds. I will update you daily on this issue.

The Oklahoman reports that a bill eliminating the cap on the number of new charter schools that can be established annually in Oklahoma was signed into law by the governor, and will take effect November 1. Listen up NC “education establishment”.
“The cap on the number of charter schools should be removed. Existing charter schools with a record of success should be duplicated.” (GOP convention party platform released June 5 says in Article VII, 3). Paul Norcross, Shannon Moody and I manned a booth for the Alliance recently at that convention in Winston Salem. We are attempting to have a booth at the Democratic convention next month.

Education Week and the Editorial Projects in Education (EPE) Research Center have released their Diplomas Count 2010 report. According to the report, which looks at a 10 year graduation trend, slightly fewer than 69 percent of all public school students in the nation graduated from high school in the class of 2007. Based on their approach, the Cumulative Promotion Index (CPI) method to calculate high school graduation rates for public high schools, North Carolina’s Class of 2007 10 Year graduation rate was 46th in the nation at 57.8% ( a drop for 58.3% in 1997). An explanation of the methodology used to determine graduation rates can be found by clicking here.
