Charter Leaders,

Well, we have a home! It’s about a mile from the Education Building and General Assembly in Raleigh at 512 St. Mary’s St. We should be in next week and you are invited to come visit any time between 8:30 and 6:30, Monday through Thursday.

A round of applause for Evergreen Community Charter School teacher Stuart Miles for being named North Carolina Charter School Teacher of the Year!

Last Wednesday I attended the Leadership & Innovations Committee meeting as well as the State Board’s full meeting. At the former the Office of Charter Schools recommended non-renewal of Cape Lookout’s charter. On the next day the Board allowed a one-month delay of the recommendation. I was able to address the full Board on the issue and pointed out that I hoped the OCS would work closely with schools by helping them redesign a mission if the schools are performing but have diverted from the promised way of delivering quality education. It is important for you to remember that the substance of what you are doing may not be enough and the form in your charter must be followed.

I would enjoy hearing some thoughts about this, especially if you have faced challenges in meeting your school’s mission. For Cape Lookout and the Academy of Moore County, both facing renewal by the OCS, I contacted the legislators representing each school and urged them to contact their respective schools and offer help.

The Alliance Board met Tuesday in Raleigh and added to its body, Todd Havican, a long time devotee of charters and a Union Academy Cardinal. Meet Todd at the Feb. 26 Roundtable at UA in Monroe.

Share with the charter community what is going on in your school on Facebook.

Have a great week!
