Stuart Miles Charter Teacher of the Year


Stuart teaches 7th and 8th grade science at Evergreen Community Charter School in Asheville, NC.  He was recently named the 2009-2010 North Carolina Charter School Teacher of the Year.  He has created a dynamic interdisciplinary science curriculum in the four years he has worked at Evergreen CCS, weaving strands of environmental education, character development, and hands-on learning.  In addition to being a staff member, he is also a member of the Board of Directors of Evergreen Community Charter School.

Stuart is a native of Greenwood, South Carolina. Stuart graduated from the SC Governors School of Science and Mathematics and the University of Charleston. He is an alumni of Teach for America, where he taught 8th grade science in Helena, Arkansas. Stuart has worked in the fields of outdoor education as well as college science education, and is currently working on his Master in Science Education from Montana State University. Stuart hiked the entire Appalachian Trail in 2005, and moved to Asheville in 2006.

In his free time he enjoys hiking, whitewater kayaking, mountain biking and Duke basketball.
