Members,
Since the Charter School Act in 1996 North Carolina’s public charter schools have never had an organization dedicated to full time advocacy and service for them. The Office of Charter Schools (OCS), an affiliate of the NC Department of Public Instruction (DPI), is both a resource and regulator of the schools. It is in place to assist the schools and also to ensure they fulfill their charter and meet the requirements and policies of DPI. OCS is obligated to the state of North Carolina and its State Board of Education.
Alternatively, The NC Alliance for Public Charter Schools (Alliance) is organized solely for the purpose of advancing quality educational opportunities for all of the state’s children by supporting and expanding successful public charter schools. TheAlliance is therefore obligated to the children of North Carolina, their parents, and to the state’s public charter schools, including their administrators and educators.
Our objectives are:
- To advance quality educational opportunities for NC students.
- To become the primary advocacy organization and voice for charter schools in North Carolina.
- To educate the public about what charter schools are and why they are needed.
- To create a communications forum for the charter community.
- To enhance the legislative and regulatory environment.
- To harness the collective charter resources to leverage those resources.
- To provide an annual conference and workshops to share best practices.
As we gather membership in the Alliance, complete the infrastructure of our operations, launch this website, plan our July Raleigh conference, and meet with schools, we will more specifically define how we will implement the 7 objectives above. We welcome your input as to how we can serve you and ask that you let us know.
Call, email, write, or use a blog under Resources to let us know today what we can do to make your school a successful public charter school.
