The Leon Levine Foundation announced Wednesday morning it is donating $300,000 to KIPP-Charlotte, a charter school.

The announcement was made at KIPP-Charlotte’s fund raising breakfast.

KIPP Academy has an enrollment of about 280 students in grades 5 through 7. The school, on The Plaza in northeast Charlotte, offers a college preparatory program and is designed to help students from low-income backgrounds.

School officials say 99 percent of the enrollment consists of African American or Latino students. The curriculum follows the Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP), a national network of tuition-free schools with high academic standards. KIPP-Charlotte plans to add an eighth grade in the 2010-11 academic year.
